628 - Lago di Antorno

Today’s itinerary was absolutely stacked.

First on the list was Lago di Misurina, then Lago di Antorno, then finally Tre Crime. And if that all sounds like gibberish to you, let’s break it down.

Our day started with Lago di Misurina, which translates in English to Lake Misurina- named after the Italian fable of a girl whose tears formed the lake after her father turned into a mountain.

He’d made a begrudging deal with a fairy to trade his life for a magic mirror- a mirror that his daughter desired more than anything. But it wasn’t until her father was out cold that she realized the true depth of his love for her.

Sucks. But we got this beautiful lake out of it:

The only problem was that I could already tell these clouds were gonna be an issue. We had two more sites to see, and these were no ordinary nimbus.

They hovered indifferently- revealing microscopic portions of a peak only to conceal another portion within seconds. For a day filled to the brim with activity, I knew a dark battle was coming.

We waited for another 45 minutes, hoping to see a change but the clouds didn’t bother. The picture above was the most they moved all morning.

The second lake, only 10 minutes down the road, told a similar story. The clouds mocked our entitlement to their very existence. But for this round we had nothing but time on our hands. Our reservation for Tre Cime- a 6.5 mile hiking trail- wasn’t until that evening.

We kicked up our feet and waited. And waited. And within moments, the clouds giveth:

You give one, you take one. The clouds had appealed to our westward demands. But this wasn’t a freebie- within ten seconds, the clouds reclaimed that fateful peak into the abyss.

And now, in a fit of irony, we were stuck waiting again. For now the show had already finished- and it wasn’t until sunset that we’d see the final crusade against the clouds at Tre Cime.

Stay tuned.
