What is Focus Stacking?

Focus stacking is when you blend multiple shots of the same composition together so that the entire image is in focus.

This technique is used because if the depth of field is large enough, shooting at a high f/stop (like f/18 or f/20, for example) will still leave things out of focus.

It’s particularly relevant in compositions where you have a foreground object that’s close to the camera, and a background that’s far away.

Practical Uses for Focus Stacking

  • Maintaining focus throughout an entire image, especially if the subject is close to the camera

  • If you’d rather shoot a scene at a sharper f/stop, like f/9, instead of f/18 or f/20. Most camera’s perform better in these middle-ground f/stops
