664 - Deception Pass
Today we landed in Washington. The other Washington.
We’d finally made it out to the West Coast, and for the next week, our plan was to drive up to Canada and milk it for all it was worth. (Which wasn’t much given 1 CAN dollar was worth .72 USD.)
But first, fish n’ chips. A pacific northwest staple. We pulled up to Spud’s, which is famous for their garlic-infused vinegar and hand-breaded fillets. Need I say more?
Today’s name of the game was Deception Pass. Which was a convenient detour on the three hour drive up to Vancouver. The state park features a variety of beaches and seaside forests, but the real attraction is the bridge, which hangs over a small channel between two islands.
It’s called Deception Pass because sailors used to think the channel was just a dead-end, when it was actually a secret passageway to a much larger bay.
Fortunately for us, the cool sounding name caused us to zoom in the Google Maps, inevitably determining that this would be a suitable, if not downright satisfactory, destination for sunset.
We pulled up to the parking lot about an hour before sunset, and immediately fell into decision fatigue. There were a ridiculous amount of beautiful beaches in the area, but which one had the best view?
Only the Lord knows.
We settled on Macs Cove, after walking all the way down to the beach, then all the way back to our car, then all the way back to the same beach. There were simply too many options to pick from.
And don’t you be laughing either. You try making up your mind when everything around you is world-class scenery and the sun’s setting in 30 minutes.
But as it turns out, our original choice turned out to be the best choice, because the bridge lit up nicely when the sun dipped on the horizon:
And the water was even more dazzling:
The texture on that is absolutely bonkers. Just…. Wow.
A seal even popped his head up during the show, but only in a corner of the water that wasn’t sparkling like a birthday cake, so I didn’t include it. Whatever. Seals are like the deer of the ocean anyway. (I was still impressed though.)
Next stop… Vancouver. We’re hitting a lighthouse, a waterfall, and even a wrecked train or two. So stay tuned raccoon.
