658 - Woodstock Fire Tower
Today we climbed a fire tower in Virginia.
You know, those things firefighters used to sit at the top of to watch out for fires before satellites kicked in. Not the worst summer job.
Alara’s been wanting to visit one for years, and since we’d just finished hiking Copernicus Ridge, it was practically right down the street.
We arrived an hour or so before sunset, and had the place to ourselves. I quickly loaded up the drone and snagged a shot:
Despite the incredible view, this was a fairly tricky shot to get.
You can’t see it in this photo, but directly below the bottom crop is a massive take off zone for hang gliders. Cool in theory, but when you zoom out with the drone, it just looks like a massive chunk of dead land taken off the mountain.
It’s a major eye sore, and this is practically the only angle that gives the fire tower that remote “endless forest” look. But nonetheless, it’s a solid view.
A few moments later, an entire family of sight showed up and turned the three story tower into a rocking boat, so we quickly got out. I’m not a heights guy, but I’ll do it for the shot.
MORE FIRETOWERS INCOMING.
