619 - The Biodome
Today we explored the Biosphere of Montreal, not to be confused with the Biodome of Montreal.
One’s an environmental museum, and the other’s an environmental museum. Got it?
It wasn’t until I put it into Google Maps that I realized they were two completely different things. The Biosphere, which we explored today, was a massive metal sphere that housed a museum about how to save the environment.
The Biodome, on the other hand, was the velodrome for the 1976 Summer Olympics, which has recently been converted into a massive zoo.
Needless to say, the Biosphere is what caught my interest because of its design. I had to keep this architecture hot streak on fire.
And speaking of fire, the moment we arrived at the Biosphere, it started pouring rain. You can even see the drops emerging on the bench in my initial shot of the building:
You don’t even want to know the amount of bird shit I Photoshopped off that bench.
The strange thing about the sphere is that it wasn’t protected- it’s simply a steel “wire” surrounding the interior building. This meant that even when you were inside, you weren’t inside.
Luckily, it slowed down by the time we wandered through the (fairly mid) museum portion of the Biosphere, and I was able to snag this photo of the wire looking up:
Gotta love that perfect symmetry. It took me a few moments to get that precision- but it was worth it. I snagged one more photo on the way out of this tree, to add as little green to the set:
It was surprising how little Bio the Biosphere had. Besides a few plants, the museum was a mostly brutalist building. Maybe throw some vines on the thing?
Either way, the shoot was a nice addition to my Urban Portfolio, which is a collection of photos that my tree-hugging followers love to pretend doesn’t exist.
One day ya’ll will come around.
I’m on a mission to explore more.
